Music

Words woven into frenzied fantasies
Strain fiercely to reveal the inner sense
Of all the vast soul feels, in the intense
Strong surging rhythms and deep pulsings, miss
Of all the meaning wrapped in one mute kiss:
Ten thousand songs gain not the recompense
Of hands pressed softly sweet, conveying thence
A world of love surged in a world of bliss.

Until I heard mysterious mutterings
Throb tenderly from 'plaining instruments
Strange mediums from the far spirit world
Hope lured from soul to soul on trembling wings.
When music speaks then love's sweet ravishments
Lie all before us as a scroll unfurled.
