The Savant
As experts tasked to read a written page
Torn in a thousand shreds, with eager care
Collect and re-arrange until the bare
Truth stands revealed,—even so the sage
Of Nature cons each sign though bleared with age;
He gathers all earth's mysteries to compare
Her foul contortions with her beauteous fair,
And thereby doth a sapient thirst assuage
To test the written Truth with Truth revealed
In God's own sure handwriting, words direct,
Freed from mediums of man's misgiving tongue,
And when the glorious record all unsealed
Spreads out a fair and noble retrospect
Not vain have savants probed and poets sung.
Torn in a thousand shreds, with eager care
Collect and re-arrange until the bare
Truth stands revealed,—even so the sage
Of Nature cons each sign though bleared with age;
He gathers all earth's mysteries to compare
